Line Item classification

Unlock the value hidden in your line item data

In an ideal world, every item procured would be accurately, consistently and appropriately classified at the point of purchase. The data would be made readily accessible, so that procurement professionals could use it to inform and improve the procurement process. In reality, analysis of what was bought is severely hampered by incomplete or poorly structured item descriptions, as well as inconsistent (and often erroneous) classification. As a consequence, the data is relatively valueless for strategic sourcing purposes.

To ‘unlock' the hidden value in your line item (PO) data, our artificial intelligence (AI) based classification engine known as Babel, ‘reads' item descriptions and supplier names, including ‘free text' entries, and 'infers' the UNSPSC or eClass category for the item concerned.

Leading auto-classification technology

Babel is underpinned by a technology called AutoClass. Auto-Class is acknowledged to be the leading AI auto-classification technology of its type and is particularly suited to the classification of medical and related items,as the health AI knowledge base has already been used to process £bns of medical and related expenditure.

AutoClass is no 'ivory-tower' technology - the classification engine is currently being used by many of the world's largest buyers of goods & services. And it really works - in our last project AutoClass was used to 'read' more than 160,000 medical item descriptions and classified 96% by volume and 92% by value to UNSPSC Class & Commodity at an accuracy of 86%.
